Call this The Seven Year Itch (to get married) or The Five-Year Engagement (and a muchanticipated wedding). JEAN DANKER is finally ready to walk down the aisle with Glenn Ong. She tells us all about their love, what she thinks being a wife means, and the challenges they face (and are facing?) as soon-to-be newlyweds.
Jean Danker needs we a drink right now. She has just come from a long meeting with her pastor — who’ll be marrying her and Glenn Ong on December 16 — where they had discussed, amongst other things, the challenges faced by couples during marriage. And Jean’s feeling… overwhelmed, to say the least.
“[The challenges are] something Glenn and I are both aware of, but when you’re forced to think about it… it was a really quite a reality check,” says the Class 95 jock, sighing as though she had just been made to sit for an exam she’d forgotten to revise for... but has passed anyway.
We’re now having lunch at a restaurant on Dempsey Hill and she suddenly suggests order some wine. It takes us by surprise, mainly because Jean Danker is not much of a drinker. We were both guests at a wedding over the weekend and after just a couple of glasses of bubbly, Jean ended up nursing a headache.
But today, Jean needs a drink ASAP. And alcohol, as well as a variety of other issues, which we will talk about, is on the menu. So, chin chin?
After seven years together (five of which they spent engaged), Jean, 38, and Glenn, 46, are finally taking their much awaited trip down the aisle in front of 250 guests at the Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa.
We last spoke to the couple in 2012 when they told us, with certainty, that their wedding would take place the following year. But a lot has happened since then. In 2013, Jean’s mum passed away from a critical illness. Not many people know this, but the couple had planned a wedding shortly after Glenn proposed in 2011 — their haste a result of the doctor’s gloomy prognosis of her mum’s condition. But three days before the wedding, Jean realised it wasn’t what she really wanted, and that wedding was shelved.
