Behind the image of the serial kisser, lies an artiste of sensitive dimensions. Raghuvendra singh talks cinema with actor-turned-producer emraan hashmi
He’s witnessed the dizzying heights of success and he’s experienced the horror of the fall. He’s seen life and its unpredictability up close. Yet he’s found a way to remain attached, to his career and ambitions… albeit with detachment. When it comes to movie stars, you don’t get someone who’s more in sync with reality than Emraan Hashmi. When his movies fail to recreate the hysteria of a few years back, Emraan draws inspiration from the fact that he’s given his best shot. With a cool disposition and invaluable insights, he looks to debut as a film producer with Captain Nawab. He’s a little piqued by the serial kisser moniker, which refuses to wane. Amidst controversy and conjecture, he looks forward to many exciting tomorrows…
You’re now producing Captain Nawab for director Tony D’Souza. Did you always want to get into production?
I wanted to get into production two years back. But with my son Ayaan falling ill, it got postponed. I’ve heard from producers that production is like sitting on an electric chair, you have to absorb a lot of shocks. But as a hands-on producer, I can have an official say in the film we make. Right or wrong, good or bad, at least it’s my baby. And creatively, I can represent it the way I want.
You seem to have faith in Tony despite Ashar not doing as expected...
Yes. Completely, Before Azhar, he had made Blue, which people were apprehensive about. Also I stand by Azhar. It’s one of my best films. There are other reasons why it didn’t do well. But as a technical director, Tony’s fabulous. He works his ass off to get a film up there. Azhar is a good product.
