In the recently released and critically acclaimed film, Janhit Mein Jaari, Nushrratt Bharuccha plays a woman who sells condoms. It's a brave move by the actress, who is more known for her greyshaded roles in romcoms. If an image change was her motive, then she has succeeded. She’ll next be seen in films like Ram Setu, Selfie, Chhori 2 and Hurdang. She’s peaking at the right time, and you can see her eyes sparkle with happiness when you meet her. Mention that to her and she tells you everything is transitory and she’s aiming for long-term relevance rather than short-term success. Excerpts from an interview with the straight-talking actress.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO SAY YES TO JANHIT MEIN JAARI?
I forget the name of the film but I remember seeing this film in 2007 where a girl asks for a condom in a chemist shop, which caused havoc. Now, after so many years, a girl is seen selling condoms. Actually, the thing is that no one even talks about it; no film has been made on this subject. People are shy of talking about this topic. That is why no one has attempted to touch this topic. So all of us crazy people, including Raj Shaandilyaa, Jai Basantu Singh, and Vinod Bhanushali ji, got together and decided to make a film about it.
WERE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE FACT THAT PEOPLE MIGHT MAKE FUN OF IT?
Yes. It was a challenge to try this new thing, the reactions of the public were unpredictable. We were aware that it may be rejected. I genuinely felt that people who really want to bring about a change in society would support this film. If they don’t, then such films will never be made.
