PRINCESS DIANA’S LEGACY
Even as a number of formal monuments and tributes are being planned to commemorate the 20th death anniversary of Princess Diana, who died tragically in a car crash on August 31 1997, what has delighted her legion of fans across the world are the intangible and unplanned ways her legacy lives on.
For one whose life appeared to be imbued with such a generous helping of magical realism, it is not unsurprising that her death is marked by a phenomena of inexplicable beauty and poetic justice.
Consider the evidence: not only has the White Garden at Kensington Palace, planted as one of the tributes in her memory, blossomed into a veritable carpet of forget-me-nots, roses, tulips, scented narcissi daisies and gaura flowers, many months before expected, but Diana’s spirit lives on so palpably in her children, especially her son Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who appear to embody who she was and the values that she had stood for so emphatically.
Because from the moment she appeared on the public’s consciousness, as the possible subject of Prince Charles’ interest, the essentially shy and beautiful British Rose captured the public imagination in a way none had before. The daughter of English nobility, brought up in close proximity with the Royal Family, on the face of it, Princess Diana was to the manor born: a girl bred in pomp and privilege, who would make a perfect partner to the future King of England and bear him many heirs.
When he married her, Prince Charles who was 13 years her senior, appeared to be making the ideal choice. What neither he nor his mother the Queen, or any one else had bargained for though, was that she would turn out to be such a breath of fresh air, possessing a strong mind and personality of her own, which would impact and influence the very nature of British royalty irreversibly.
