Handloom has become the most emotive word in fashion circles. Fashion weeks are built around the theme and social media has taken to the cause with alacrity. Shalini Sharma meets the poster boy of revivalism Sanjay Garg, whose brand Raw Mango gave a whole new contemporary spin to handloom sarees. In this interview the designer warns against the dangers of glib revivalism, cautioning that the biggest victims of the handloom frenzy could ironically turn out to be the weavers themselves.
Shalini Sharma: How do you deal with resentment that you have become the poster boy of handloom revival in contemporary India even though many others are working with handloom too?
Sanjay Garg: Revival is an impressive word. What the fashion industry understands of it is that you buy handloom fabric, cut and stitch it, and that’s textile revival. Handloom is something that you work at from the yarn and loom level with the weaver. You don’t just buy or source the fabric. The designer may be making a chanderi collection but is he/she giving back to the chanderi in innovation and design? The rest comes later.
Yes, someone mentioned to me that many designers are reviving our textile traditions. I said, no, it’s funny, actually textile is reviving them! They are so out of it. To say that they’re reviving the textile is so foolish. They’re reviving themselves.
SS: Can you list the weaving traditions you have innovated upon?
