Jill Simkins and Sevil Thomas believe the taboo around women popping the question should be broken

When Kelly Brook proposed to her boyfriend of three years, Jeremy Parisi, in February, she probably wasn’t expecting him to say ‘no’. His reason, she explains, was because the spot she’d chosen to pop the question had too many onlookers. Kelly, 38, says, ‘So I tried to propose but he said it was too busy and told me to be quiet! I’ve asked him, but it wasn’t private enough!’ 

Kelly later revealed that the proposal wasn’t a ‘serious’ one, and that she didn’t take the knockback too personally.

Since then, although the couple are still together, the model still isn’t engaged, and it remains unclear whether she’ll find enough courage to ask Jeremy again in the near future. Jill Simkins and Sevil Thomas also boldly asked their partners to marry them – and they got very different results…

‘It meant a lot to him’

Quality manager Jill Simkins, 36, from Derby, proposed to partner Richard, 38, who works for Rolls-Royce, by writing “Will you marry me?” in the sand in 2016. They got married last year.

Jill says: ‘I’d definitely encourage other women to propose. There might have been a taboo around it in the past but no-one has reacted badly to mine.
