In her new book, Under Construction, the Selling Sunset star opens up about everything from her troubled childhood to her heartbreaking divorce from actor Justin Hartley.
She was born in a small Kentucky town called Draffenville and her mother Ranae, who died of lung cancer in July 2020, split up with Chrishell’s biological father before she even knew she was pregnant.
Instead, Ranae’s partner Jeff Stause raised Chrishell, who always called him “Dad”. Sadly, she also lost Jeff to lung cancer, in April 2019.
And this isn’t the only hardship the estate agent has had to endure. As one of five sisters with parents who she admits struggled with “mental health issues” and “addiction”, she had a far from perfect childhood.
In her book, Chrishell details having to wash her hair in a river while being homeless for a year. “I actually missed a whole year of middle school due to our house burning down, forcing us to live in a tent, hopping from campsite to campsite,” she writes.
The TV star and her family also “squatted” and she slept on a “wet and mildewy mattress” because the roof of one temporary home had caved in.
