Jamie Dornan, the ruggedly handsome yet modest model-turned-actor, conquered Hollywood thanks to his role as the whip brandishing billionaire Christian Grey in the 50 Shades movies – but his latest film sees him tread far more familiar ground.
In Wild Mountain Thyme, a sweeping love story set in a small Irish town, Belfast-born Jamie take the role of Anthony, a painfully shy, awkward farmer who, for three decades, has been oblivious to the advances of his beautiful, headstrong neighbour, played by Emily Blunt.
Filming the romantic drama in Ireland before the pandemic hit was a godsend for the actor, who says he takes “any opportunity” to get back to his homeland. However, during Covid times, home has been a couple of hours outside London, where Jamie has been living with his wife, musician Amelia Warner, and their three children, Dulcie, Elva and Alberta.
Here, Jamie, 39, talks about swapping film sets for homeschooling, what it’s like to work with Amelia, who composed the film’s score, and how he deals with his “weird” insecurities.
Jamie, you filmed Wild Mountain Thyme in Ireland. How connected do you feel to your homeland?
