The sorrow of bidding goodbye to her loyal soulmate the Duke of Edinburgh at the weekend must have been heartbreaking for Her Majesty the Queen. But former Royal Editor Duncan Larcombe believes that she will take immense comfort from visiting the places where she shared so many happy times with Philip. “They lived much of their life with the whole world watching, but the Sandringham Estate, Windsor Castle, and Balmoral, in particular, provided a chance for the couple to escape and to enjoy more privacy while spending quality quiet time together,” says Duncan. “I think it will be especially emotional for the Queen when she arrives at Sandringham this Christmas and when she goes for a stroll across the Balmoral estate in the Highlands during her annual summer break. She will be surrounded by fond memories of family barbecues, gatherings with friends, and long walks. Reminiscing while there about happy times with Philip will bring her some happiness.”
The Queen’s deep love for her husband of 73 years is evident in the images shared on the royal family’s social media in the past week, including a particularly poignant shot (right) that shows her looking adoringly at him while he presented an Enterprise Promotion Award at Buckingham Palace. Also, an image taken from the couple’s 1969 Christmas card was posted, showing them with their children as they posed around a speedboat on the Royal Yacht Britannia, as was a picture of the Queen and Prince Philip enjoying a happy moment at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
