Top of the list is breaking up a favorite couple. Or, in the case of GH, breaking up every favorite couple. Carly/Sonny, Jason/Sam, Nikolas/Ava, Ned/Olivia, Curtis/Jordan, Finn/Anna, Franco/Liz, Nina/ Jax, Michael/Willow ... all Splitsville. Was it overkill? Yes. Did they respect the time and energy fans had invested in the duos before demolishing them? In some cases.
Liz and Franco’s end was the worst. He was murdered by Peter, but Liz blamed her innocent ex, Jason. Worse, Liz didn’t mourn Franco. Months later, she had a few scenes with Carly at the graveyard talking about their mutual losses but it was too little, too late.
The best was Finn and Anna’s. The doctor and the spy had little in common and had clearly run their creative course (Anna having tea with Violet was not a story). Anna is now with the much more suitable Valentin, a fellow agent with whom she shares sizzling chemistry. Finn turned to Liz and they’ve grown closer via their shared medical backgrounds and mutual hatred for Peter — hiding a body always brings people together. In the end, Finn/Liz and Valentin/Anna work better than their previous liaisons, although my jury’s out on the other couples created out of this carnage.
Bottom line: There has to be at least one front-burner couple happy and in love at all times on a soap opera. GH should have cranked Laura/ Kevin up to 11 before blowing up every romance on the show. They dropped the ball on this one.
That said, let’s all welcome the newest Quartermaine, Austin Gatlin-Holt!
Monica: “Edward’s libido strikes again.”
Jason: “You want me to check this guy out?”
