It was a dark day for America on January 6, when thousands of President Donald Trump’s supporters violently stormed the US Capitol building in Washington, prompting evacuations, arrests and injuries – which led to five deaths. The mob had initially gathered to protest the election results at Trump’s behest, as the US Congress gathered to confirm Joe Biden as the 46th president. However, the rally quickly turned to rioting. “We will never concede,” Trump said hours before.

He has since faced fierce condemnation from both Democrats and Republicans for encouraging his supporters to fight to overturn Biden’s victory. “They weren’t protesters; don’t dare call them protesters,” President-elect Biden said of the rioters. “They were a riotous mob, insurrectionists, domestic terrorists. It’s that basic. And I wish we could say we couldn’t see it coming, but that’s not true. We could see it coming.”
