The Paw
Ladybug Magazine for Kids|January 2017

Sarah skipped happily beside Mama. She was on her way to visit the polar bear at his new home in the zoo. They stopped by a shiny railing around a large pool.

“There he is!” Sarah shouted. A big white bear stepped slowly into the water.

Sarah and Mama followed a noisy crowd of people down a long ramp into a large room. Everyone crowded near a glass wall. Through the glass, Sarah could see the bottom of the bear’s deep pool.

Children were calling the bear. Babies were fussing. The room was very warm. The air felt moist. “Are we in the bear’s house?” Sarah asked.

Before Mama could answer, the bear glided around the curve in the pool.

“Mama! Look at his big paws!” Sarah shouted. The bear was near the water’s surface, above Sarah’s head. Suddenly, the bear stopped swimming. He flipped over and floated upside down in the water. He looked fat and heavy in his wet fur.
