Nearly 18 years after its first release, Knoppix continues to innovate. Still, the release is a bit of an oddity for a couple of reasons. First, in contrast to most other distros, Knoppix only ships a Live-DVD image. The 4GB offering, full of practical and esoteric apps in equal measure, is blazingly fast. Second, the distro is one of the only ones to still offer Compiz, enabled by default no less. Experienced Linux users will remember Compiz as a composting window manager that brought some much needed 3D effects to the Linux desktop, but hasn’t been seen much of in recent years.
