The new smartphone sales will be predominantly driven by the aspiration of existing smartphone users to upgrade to a premium experience. The market will continue to be mainly an upgrade market and is expected continue its growth.

With smartphones entering every facet of our lives, here are some big trends that we can look out for in the year 2020 - starting with 5G.

5G

5G has the potential to bring an unprecedented change in smartphone market in the year 2020, with the introduction of 5G smartphones starting from the premium price band and then moving to mid end segment over the year. Late last year, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 865 as its latest flagship SoC supporting 5G networks. They also announced the Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G SoCs for mid-range smartphones. all three 5G-capable chips are expected to make way to India through new and engaging smartphones.

In 2020, 5G is likely to become a reality in India with its spectrum allocation taking place. The Telecom regulatory authority of India (TraI) chairman ram Sewak Sharma assured that India will no longer be behind the technology curve following the timely launch of 5G networks. Having said that, 5G is speculated to take longer to roll out, 5G enabled smartphones will precede the service roll-out.

With more than 1 billion smartphone users worldwide, it’s not surprising to see that manufacturers are doing their best to come up with even more technical innovations for the smartphone market. and, despite the intense competition; brand, product and channel innovation will continue in 2020.

There is tremendous work happening in the areas of processing power, security, photography and battery life of smartphones. Products functionalities are going to continue to rise in each segment, letting consumer receive better value for spend on the smartphone.
