I ONCE dropped a sizzling lamb noisette on the floor. Yes, I know; embarrassing, not to mention clumsy. The incident occurred during my Domestic Science ‘O’ Level exam as I attempted to decant half a dozen deboned chops onto a serving plate. It was probably the exotic nature of the dish which distracted me. At that stage in my life I’d never eaten, let alone cooked, a recipe which encompassed garlic, rosemary and shiitake mushrooms. Anyway, amid the panic of stuffing the now dusty little blighter into the pocket of my cross stitch embroidered apron during a distraction (the examiner admonishing a fellow classmate for sipping cooking sherry), my choux buns languished in the oven for too long. No doubt their over-baked aura is the reason I’ve avoided cooking them ever since.
