The islands and peninsulas of the Atlantic coast can make a mini-break feel like a great escape

ISLAND LIFE

Life on the edge, where land meets the sea, has a special sort of synergy. When you tune into its rhythm, its influence over the landscape and its people is all embracing.

This is what I love about the west coast of France, where the full force of the Atlantic Ocean is displayed in all its splendour. Rocky, exposed headlands give way to crescent-shaped secluded coves, while sand dunes and pine forests provide shelter from the storms.

Sometimes dramatic, often diverse, these defining features in the landscape set them apart from the rest of France. Each location comes with its own customs and traditions, making them a joy to experience.

Here are five of the best Atlantic adventures from Île d’Oléron and Île de Aix, Île de Ré, Île de Noirmoutier and north towards the Crozon peninsula of Brittany.

Family fun on the Île d’Oléron

West of Rochefort is Île d’Oléron, France’s second largest island (after Corsica) and considered its oyster capital. Try them at one of the first colourful cabanes you come across immediately after crossing the (toll-free) bridge, to get fully immersed into the way of life from the start.

The first town you come to is Le Château-d’Oléron, which is such a delightful place that you may wish to stay put. The 17th-century citadelle has picture-perfect views back to the mainland and beside it you’ll find a cluster of artists’ studios that have taken over some of the brightly coloured wooden oyster huts. Watch the painters and potters at work and take home a souvenir (couleurs-cabanes.fr).
