Adam Henson on the ways grounds are used when the crowds go home
THE season of mighty livestock parades, frenetic sheep-shearing contests and impressive heavy horse displays is almost upon us. Millions of us will pour through the gates of county shows this summer to see the very best of British farming in action. From the Nottinghamshire Show in May right through to the Westmorland County Show in mid-September, these celebrations take place all over the UK. I’m such a fan that I’ve become the ambassador for my local show, the Royal Three Counties, at Malvern.
But have you ever given a thought to what happens at those enormous showgrounds for the other 51 weeks of the year? When the main event of the summer season is over and the crowds have gone home, the site remains with all its permanent buildings, barns and stables, offices, roads and utility networks. In fact the biggest showgrounds in the country are almost like mini-towns in their own right.
