Want a tree or shrub that provides interest all year round? Martyn Cox has the answer.
SOME trees and shrubs are admired for their striking bark, stems or variegated foliage that brighten up winter, while others have gorgeous blossom in spring or put on a show-stopping display of flowers in summer. A number are renowned for their autumnal berries, fruit or leaves that turn fiery shades before they drop.
If you’ve got a large garden you can probably find space for a number of these seasonal wonders, even if their moment in the sun lasts for just a few weeks. However, when there’s not enough room to swing a cat, then every plant has to earn its keep by providing more than one season of highlights.
Fortunately, there are plenty of trees and shrubs that are suitable for smaller gardens due to their compact nature or upright growth habit, and offer great value as they will work their socks off over many months. Many of these are suitable for large containers, allowing those with just a patio or courtyard to ramp up the interest.
