We are all for kinky experimentation but there are certain zones that you should not venture into. Femina takes you through the places that are least suited for sex
Experimentation is the key to a fun and fruitful sex life. However, there is a thin line between pushing the envelope and being foolhardy. While we would always encourage you to expand your sexual repertoire, it is also our duty to warn you of the consequences if you decide to have some nooky in these no-go zones.
Underwater shenanigans
Trying out different things is a good way to keep your sex life interesting, and some nooky in the water could prove to be just what the doctor ordered. Ironically, however, the fact is that no doctor will recommend that you have actual penetrative sex in water, owing to the health risks associated with it.
For starters, a lot depends on where you plan to have sex. While water per se will not harm you, all the pathogens—chemicals like chlorine in case of a pool; and salt, in the case of sea water—that will be pushed inside you with every thrust can cause irritation or infections. And remember that the water in your tub or Jacuzzi at home will be filled with germs as well, since it is unlikely to be treated, like in the case of a pool.
“During penetration, water enters the vagina and washes away the natural vaginal lubrication, making intercourse uncomfortable,” says Dr Rajan Bhonsle, a Mumbai-based consultant in sexual medicine and counsellor. He adds that it can also cause micro-abrasions in the vagina, making it more susceptible to infections. Additionally, if one already has a fungal infection, warm water can worsen it. “The entry of any foreign substance (including water) into the vagina can disturb its pH balance and increase the possibility of infections in the vagina and/or the urinary tract,” he informs.
