Sara Ali Khan Talks About Her Star Parents, And Finding Her Way

As Sara Ali Khan gears up to pose for cameras, she requests the English music being played at the studio be changed to Hindi. Soon, the space is buzzing with hits of Kabhi Kabhie and Chandni, much to her delight. The actor’s sheer ease during the shoot makes it difficult to fathom that the 23-year-old is only two films old. But then, you can’t ignore her gene pool, can you? Her mother, Amrita Singh, who accompanies her daughter to the shoot, stands in a corner keenly observing every move, and Khan, on her part, looks at her post each click, as if that’s the only validation that matters. It is then that one gets a sense of their unbreakable bond. Over to the rising star.

There is no denying the similarity in features between you and your mother. Are you two similar people too or do you share more in common with your father?

I am a mix of my parents—physically, and the person I am. I live with my mother, and admire her for everything she stands for. As a combination of the environment I have grown up in, and the fact that I have consciously tried to imbibe a lot of my mother’s traits, I am like her as a human being. However, my habits, my choices and my desires are similar to my father’s.

You’ve said any combination of Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan is going to be weird. Which of their weird habits have you picked up?

When I say my parents are weird, I mean they are unlike other people in their fields; they don’t feel the added pressure to adhere to expected notions. This makes them appear different, bindaas, and unique. I would like to believe I have their free spirit and common habits of doing what they feel is right without worrying about external judgements. On the less positive side, both of them can be impulsive; I have acquired that trait too.
