This month marks 75 years since British and Canadian troops liberated the Nazi concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen in Germany and came across unimaginable scenes.

Thousands of bodies lay unburied around the camp, where 60,000 people were packed together without food, water or basic sanitation. Many were suffering from typhus, dysentery and starvation.

Accompanying the British 11th Armoured Division that day was the BBC’s war correspondent Richard Dimbleby, the first journalist allowed into the camp, who sent harrowing radio reports to Britain describing emaciated people and dead babies.
