NEW DRAMA
Devs
Wed & Thu, BBC2 HD, 9pm
When it comes to unsettling visions of what science might have in store for us, British writer/director Alex Garland has form – from Oscar-winning artificial-intelligence drama Ex Machina to the disturbing sci-fi of Netflix’s Annihilation.
It’s a subject he returns to once again this week in new BBC2 drama Devs, set around the development department of a tech corporation called Amaya in Silicon Valley.
The opening episode follows Sergei (Karl Glusman), whose work so impresses his boss Forest (Fargo’s Nick Offerman) that he offers Sergei a position in ‘Devs’ on a highly classified project.
‘Devs is a secretive department that deals with new inventions and technology,’ reveals Alison Pill, who plays Forest’s second-in-command, quantum physicist Katie. ‘Nobody else in the company is quite aware of what’s going on in there.’
