The events at the heart of Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist, Netflix’s latest must-see true-crime documentary, are so strange and far-fetched that it sounds like the plot of a Hollywood movie.
In 2003, pizza deliveryman Brian Wells calmly walked into a bank in Erie, Pennsylvania, holding a shotgun disguised as a cane and with a bomb strapped to his chest, and demanded $250,000.
As police surrounded him on the road outside, he told them he could only remove the bomb – fastened to a locked metal collar around his neck – if he followed a set of hand-written treasure hunt-style instructions to retrieve the keys.
