As his hit series draws to an end this week, Peter Kay reveals what happened off camera during filming…
Working in a confined space, staring at the same face for hours on end, while driving with a camera rig strapped to your car bonnet isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it couldn’t get any better for comedian Peter Kay.
‘Car Share is my dream job!’ says Peter, 43, whose smash-hit BBC1 comedy follows colleagues and car-share buddies John Redmond (Peter) and Kayleigh Kitson (Sian Gibson) on their daily commute to their local supermarket.
‘Working with my best friend everyday and just having a laugh?
It’s not stressful at all. We even stopped off at a Toby Carvery for lunch and did the school run once.
‘We had a childcare issue one day so we went to pick up the kids in the Fiat and took them to my mum’s,’ says Peter, who has three children with his wife Susan, and is godfather to Sian’s four year-old daughter, Gracie.
‘We dragged the entire crew along, but that’s the joy of Car Share – you’re travelling with a convoy of vehicles so you can make a diversion for childcare purposes or shopping needs. We also tried to shoot the majority of the series within a three-or four-mile radius of my house. For toilet reasons.’
