They say it’s not the winning but the taking part that counts – and the competitors in BBC2’s hit travel show Race Across the World would wholeheartedly agree. Although taking home the £20,000 prize would be quite nice…

We were hooked on last year’s emotion-sapping but thoroughly addictive series, which followed teams of two in a race to get to Singapore from London, without using smartphones, credit cards or even stepping foot on a plane.

In this second, eight-part series, five new pairs will cover over 25,000km from the heart of Mexico City to Ushuaia, Argentina, the most southerly city in the world.

The same rules apply – no phones, flights or credit cards – but they’ll each have a budget of £1,453, the equivalent of a one-way airfare.

We asked physiotherapist Jo, 54, from Manchester, who teamed up with her 19-year-old son, Sam, who has ADHD, about their epic trip…
