A Japanese action series based on a 16th-century Chinese novel,badly dubbed into English, doesn’t sound like classic TV. But for a generation of viewers, BBC2’s early 1980s teatime show Monkey was unmissable viewing. 

Now, three decades on, the mythical tales of the Monkey King have been revamped for a new generation in a 10-part Netflix series. This time, the show relocates the action from China and India to a fantasy land where demons have been in power for centuries.
