The Real Reason Matt Won't Come Back To Australia

Bert and Patti’s embattled son has severed all ties with his homeland to leave his demons behind

Over the past few years, the future has been looking a little brighter for Bert and Patti Newton’s troubled son Matthew.

He’s rumoured to be married to Catherine Schneiderman – the daughter of a once high-flying politician in New York – and moved into her two-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s trendy Upper West Side.

They’re the proud parents of two cats, Tiny and Jean, with friends saying Catherine is keen to become a mother as soon as possible.

However, 42-year-old Matt is essentially estranged from his own family in Melbourne’s Hawthorn, who would love to be involved if he was to give them a grandchild.

But Woman’s Day sources reveal the chances of Matt returning to Australia are slim to none, with the actor determined to leave his past behind. “Because of his scandals over the years, Matthew can’t face coming home to Australia,” our source explains. “If he has, he’s laid low. But I don’t think he’s been back since they closed his assault case against the cab driver [in 2012]. He took off for America as soon as he could.”
