HER name, Amal, means hope, she’s from Syria and she’s only nine years old – but she’s about to travel thousands of kilometres on foot through strange lands on a unique journey of peace.
And her existence is all thanks to two South Africans who came out of retirement to produce her. Amal is a towering 3,5m puppet, the creation of Capetonians Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler, whose renowned Handspring Puppet Company was also responsible for the puppets in the hit production War Horse.
“We’re incredibly excited to be part of this and greatly honoured,” Basil says.
On 27 July, Amal will embark on a huge search for her mom, who one day went looking for food and never returned. Hers is the story of countless refugee children displaced or left orphaned by conflict.
