They were the apple of her eye, her beloved boys. William was the dropdead gorgeous one, she said when he was a teenager, while Harry was the loveable mischief maker.
As kids, they grew up side by side, the adored sons of the world’s most famous woman, and they were united in grief when she died.
As young men they came together all the more, forming charities that would’ve made Princess Diana proud.
But you would have to be living under a rock not to know those days of mutual comfort and camaraderie are over, replaced by a rift so yawning it makes the distance between Los Angeles and London seem positively paltry.
Britain’s Prince William and Prince Harry, brothers who once shared a bond forged by trauma and tumult, have been riven apart – and royal experts say the gulf is wider and deeper than anyone may realise.
But there’s still hope – and it rests on the slim shoulders of a woman who could help heal the wounds in the brothers’ hearts. Kate Middleton has taken it upon herself to be the peacemaker between her husband and brother-inlaw and has put aside any personal resentment she may feel towards Harry and his wife, Meghan, experts say.
“Despite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Oprah interview, when Meghan accused Kate of making her cry about the bridesmaids’ dresses and failing to support her, Kate rose decidedly above it all,” veteran royal journalist Camilla Tominey says.
“She’s put her best foot forward in trying to carve a path to reconciliation between the brothers.”
