They were voted Favourite Couple at YOU Spectacular – now for the first time Bonang Matheba and AKA open up about how they met, their love for each other and their Instagram spat.
DRESSED in matching black outfits, they snuggle up next to each other on the couch, their hands entwined as they gaze adoringly into each other’s eyes. It looks like a scene from one of AKA’s music videos but this is real life – and the rapper and TV and radio presenter Bonang Matheba can hardly believe their luck.
“There are days when he looks at me and I look at him and we’re like, ‘How come you’re so great? Why am I so lucky to have you?’ ” Bonang (29) says.
“I still have those moments where I gasp and can’t believe this friendship evolved into something so special and so strong.”
Relaxing on a couch at the luxurious Southern Sun Hyde Park hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, the two sip their drinks – a gin for him, a cosmopolitan for her – and look every inch the “Supa Mega” that AKA (28) raps about in his hit song Baddest.
But in spite of their celebrity status it soon becomes clear they’re a regular couple – and they’re finally ready to talk about their relationship for the first time.
Although they’ve been together for 10 months they spent most of that time keeping their relationship under the radar. Then some months ago they started sharing pics on social media that made it clear they’re an item.
And when they appeared together for the first time on the red carpet at the YOU Spectacular awards event last month there was no denying their status as the “baddest team” around (YOU, 28 July).
The power pair won the award for Favourite Couple on the night, and the fact that YOU readers voted for them makes it even more special for the glamorous duo.
“It’s one thing to find a person you love so absolutely but to have the rest of the country support you – it means a lot,” Bonang says.
