India’s affinity for leather dates to the Vedic times.
Traditional leather production strengths are being harnessed by fashion accessory retailers and footwear retailers who are steadily forcing the manufacturing community to view the domestic market with much more interest. In the fashion accessories market, leather is a much sought after constituent. From bags, belts, wallets, purses to wristbands and chokers, leather accessories commend a remarkable share of the entire accessories market. For brands like Da Milano, that specialise in the key categories like belts, wallets, handbags, etc., leather based products bring in about 70 percent of their annual accessories sales. For Cross brand from Torero Corporation Pvt. Ltd., this figure stands at 90 percent. The list of fashion accessory players whose product mix is leather led is quite significant.

If industry veterans are to be believed, handbags are the most sought after product of the leather accessories segment, followed by wallets and belts. The change over the years has also been drastic, notes all in unison. “The scenario has changed drastically if we look back in time; owning one single handbag would suffice needs of all occasions as the purpose was merely to tuck in variables that one may need when on the go. But with time, handbags, and belts have become inseparable fashion accessories that accentuate a person’s sense of style. People now seek variety and distinction as per occasion,” said Sahil Malik, Director, Da Milano. He also added that the growth of these categories has been close to 300 percent in the last five years.
