One step into the pious ambience of the sanctum sanctorum of the golden temple and one is instantly enchanted, enthralled and healed of ones maladies. The Pristine white marbles embossed with gold leaf murals and paintings stand out as the icing on the cake whilst the temple embodies the rich culture and heritage of the Sikhs and the vibrant Sikh architecture. Golden temple (Darbar Sahib) synonymous with the court of the lord is a timeless masterpiece of the Sikh architecture which dates back to 1574 when Mughal emperor Akbar gifted the site of the sacred temple to Bibi Bhani, daughter of the third Guru Amar Dass on her wedding to Guru Ram Dass.
In 1577 Guru Ram Dass started the work on the excavation of a fresh water tank and the construction of the temple. The construction was completed under the supervision of Guru Arjun Dev in 1604, when the Adi Granth compiled by the guru was installed in the temple. The Akal Takht was later constructed in 1606 which was 12 feet in height by Guru Hargobind, Baba Buddha and Bhai Gurdas. In 1699 Bhai Mani Singh was appointed as the curator of the golden temple by Guru Gobind Singh. In 1830 Maharaja Ranjit Singh sponsored the gold plating, marble inlaying and gilding of the temple. The supply of the water to the sacred sarover was provided by river Ravi through a special canal system dug for the same.
The temple saw a major upheaval and loss of property and damage to the architecture during Operation Blue Star after which major renovation work was done in the temple.
