Singer, songwriter, and humanitarian Annie Lennox, 64, opens up to Gaby Huddart about love, family, and her current drive for Global Feminism.
Annie Lennox is a musical legend with a string of extraordinary accolades to her name, including four Grammys, a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, eight Brit Awards (six for Best British Female, an unbeaten record), and in 2011 she added an OBE to her list of achievements.
The awards are in recognition of a career that has seen her sell over 83 million records, first as one half of Eurythmics and then in a solo career that continues to this day. Annie was made a Fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors in 2015, the first female to receive the honour.
Aside from all her musical achievements, Annie was inducted as Glasgow Caledonian University’s first female Chancellor in 2017 and she has also received some 20 awards for her humanitarian and charity work recognising her dedication to the fight against HIV and AIDS and to helping the lives of women worldwide.
With such an illustrious track record, Annie could be forgiven for a touch of swagger, but not a bit of it! When we meet, she greets me with a big hug and is modest, warm, and exceptionally generous with her time—our shoot and interview overruns by three hours as there’s so much she wants to talk about.
With Mother’s Day on the horizon, it’s the issues of feminism and female empowerment that are front of her mind.
