CHOKERS
One of the most popular accessories of the ’90s and early ’00s, the practical choker is one to have in your jewellery box, simply because it’s just that fuss-free to wear. The shorter length of a choker ensures that you never have to worry about the neckline on an outfit: Camila Cabello’s barely-there choker, with its colourful drop embellishments, works beautifully with the off-the-shoulder neckline of her ensemble to create a flirty, girlish look. Alternatively, if your outfit features a higher neckline, opt for a thicker choker — like Chriselle Lim’s — to create a striking look, one that looks especially good when paired with black.
If you’re looking for something low-key, but with lots of personality, take cues from Bella Hadid. Her retro look choker — with its red stone detail and yellow gold Cuban chain — oozed Y2K street style.
But don’t dismiss the choker for being a simplistic accessory: In the world of high jewellery, this is one style that adds an instant dose of drama to any red-carpet outfit. Chokers were a popular accessory in the Victorian era, particularly with high society ladies who often wore them to grand balls — at last year’s Met Gala, Maisie Williams’ 18k white gold Cartier necklace with diamonds and onyx hinted at the period, adding understated glamour to her gothic, all-black ensemble.
