Tradition tells us that alternative art spaces are found in underground venues in lofts or warehouses. Gucci’s new exhibition, “No Space, Just A Place. Eterotopia”, is a project which supports the rich culture landscape and contemporary art ecosystem in the South Korean capital, held at the Daelim Museum.
As Gucci puts it, “every project is thematically tied to the idea of the alternative spaces as a utopian place in which to set new empowering narratives, dwelling on the understanding of otherness, the exploration of minority identities, and queer politics.” The multi-layered exhibition propounds a different perspective of an “other space” outside the mainstream realm: a new way for humans to relate to each other and to their surroundings.
Led by Myriam Ben Salah, the Tunisian-born curator invites us to explore these spaces that focus more on artistic than commercial dialogue and debate driven by Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele rumination on society concerning key themes such as the conception of eterotopia – a space within a space which mirror and yet contradict what is external – relationships between genre and gender, the ideologies around leanscapes, the urgency of self-expression, and the time-proof anthropological manifesto.
