London-based architect Andy Martin tapped intohis Aussie heritage to create an indoor-outdooroasis for his tribe.
Architect Andy Martin is doing the London thing. A surf-loving boy from Sydney, he hung up his board in the late ’80s to splash around in bigger ponds. After arriving in London in 1989, he then spent time in Japan and Paris, where he experienced his first taste of success working alongside fellow Australian architect Marc Newson on the landmark Mayfair restaurant Coast for top restaurateur Oliver Peyton.
Back in London, Andy opened AMA (Andy Martin Architecture) in 1999, which forged its reputation creating killer restaurant interiors – Chotto Matte in Soho, The Admiralty in Somerset House and Isola in Knightsbridge, to namedrop a few. On the residential front, he designed the home of Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher. So, yes, London suits him. Still, when designing a home to share with his own brood – a bespoke vessel of values and preferences – his Australian roots are ever-present.
