The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) took a big step towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream project, Skill India, by setting up the first-of-its-kind Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (UP). Varanasi is the fifth centre in the country after Mumbai, New Delhi, Jaipur and Kolkata to have an IIGJ campus.
Nirmala Sitharaman, minister of state for commerce & industry (independent charge), graced the foundation stone laying ceremony of IIGJ Varanasi Extension Campus, which is located in Kuber Mall, one of the prime areas of Varanasi city.
Speaking on the occasion, Sitharaman said, “Unlike other fields, the gems and jewellery industry and its various subsectors has a direct impact on job creation. Through proper training, it provides maximum employment to people who come from non-gem and jewellery backgrounds from rural areas.”
Sitharaman further added that the holy city of Varanasi has the longest history of human civilization and has nurtured craftsmanship for ages.
“GJEPC has come here to see that the talent which has been cultivated here for years is not lost. It is our responsibility to not only identify and support but ensure that the process is handed over to the next generation,” she remarked.
Praveenshankar Pandya, chairman, GJEPC, noted, “GJEPC, the apex gem and jewellery body in India, has always strived to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for putting India on the trajectory of growth through numerous initiatives, one such being ‘Skill India’. We are establishing an IIGJ in Varanasi, one of the oldest learning centres of the world, with the ultimate objective of nurturing talent and enhancing export from the region.
