Here is your ultimate guide for saving money while travelling over Easter or any holiday or school break.
PLAN EARLY
If you are booking your flights or vehicle fares independently and you want the cheapest prices, you should be booking now, if you haven't already. Booking the best value package holiday is more complicated. Many operators mess about with their prices and incentives and it can be hard to know exactly when you will get the best price. Offers such as ‘free’ child places can save you money, but not always. Never overlook the total, the bottom-line price, when comparing costs.
NEGOTIATE
Negotiation is the lifeblood of the travel industry. Its products are time sensitive: a room left empty one night or an airline seat that isn’t filled can’t be resold the next day. So, particularly if you are booking at the last minute, bargain – especially when dealing with tour operators, travel agents and hotels.
CONSIDER A HOME SWAP
If you live in a reasonably desirable area, and are prepared to let others borrow your house, a home swap is a cost-efficient way to arrange accommodation. Use a reputable agency to ensure proper introductions and insurance arrangements. Try Airbnb.
FORGET THE PRIVATE SWIMMING POOL
Private pools add thousands of shillings to the cost of a villa. Book a villa near the beach instead and you will still be able to swim, but your accommodation will cost you much less. Or forget the on-the-beach villa and go for those in the second or third row of the beachfront. The short walk will do you good and the savings will make you smile.
