Psychologist CHRIS HART looks at bullying, the victims and the perpetrators, and what you as a parent can do to nip it in the bud.

Bullying From Every Angle

Remember big kids shoving around anyone smaller at school? Some of your friends laughing, others getting upset? But no-one doing anything about it, because no-one dared?

There is bullying in just about every school – hitting, shoving, name-calling, spreading of rumours, mockery, shunning, threats, extorting money and possessions …

And not just in school. Bullies target kids on their way to school, going home from school, even in their homes where kids should be safe. How? Through telephone calls and trolling on social media.

Bullying is a reality of life, and it can do long-term damage.

Not only to the victim, but to the bully him/herself.

Bullies often end up with drinking and drug problems as adults, and become abusive towards their spouses and children. They are more likely to have early sex. And criminal records. So don’t brush off bullying as just part of growing up.

There are signs that a child might become a bully as early as two, although antisocial behaviour and aggression is pretty normal at that age. Preschoolers are still mastering their basic social skills, and hit and grab as part of figuring out what’s acceptable.

That’s why it’s important to teach your two-year-old how to control their anger and frustrations.

HELP! MY CHILD MAY BE A BULLY!

4 signs that your child may be a bully

1. Many aggressive outbursts that are difficult to stop.

2. Consistently refuses to follow your instructions.

3. Extremely active, impulsive and fearless.
