It’s minus 29 degrees and the ski lift stops at the top of a peak. The biting cold hits your face as a powerful gust of wind almost knocks your feet off the ground. But the body is an amazing thing when faced with the slightest of extremities; unknown instincts kick in, even as your boots dig into snow, balancing your form into a half-lean so your eyes can take in the magnificence that lies ahead. Undulating slopes are speckled with skiers zipping alongside conifer-lined inclines, and slowly the white vastness that lies beyond the higher hills and expansive ridges comes into your line of sight, only broken by the purest of blue skies with a moon like sun dancing above the glittering snow. I’m standing a little over 170km north of the Arctic Circle, on top of a ski-peak in Levi, Finland’s largest ski resort, nestled within Lapland.
