Amidst the rise and fall of restaurants, some are turning their eye to a new avenue to dazzle diners with their food: private dining, or working as private chefs.

Dine-in at Wheat Out Step into the home of Chef Suhardi Huang and hostess Carin Tay and you’re in for a treat. The couple, who have opened their home to many guests at points in time, have made sure that the set up for their private dining space in Wheat Out is classic yet elegant. The house is clearly located in a secluded, yet lush neighbourhood.

That’s their intent, of course. Chef Huang and Ms Tay’s foray into private dining is partially selling something that not many people dining out have nowadays: peace and security at home, or at the very least someone else’s home. Chef Huang is clearly in his element cooking in his kitchen, and he is comfortable discussing the elements of his cooking style while sitting in his dining table, alongside Ms. Tay. Of course, there is a matter of hosting private dinners in a place where their lives reside, which include the two teenagers that they couple have. For that, Ms. Tay and Chef Huang have set clear boundaries. guests foray upstairs to where the bedrooms are,” Ms. Tay explains. They also make sure that they reject bookings during select weeks when the kids have tests or examinations, and they try their best not to schedule dinners too late so the kids upstairs can get some rest.

To get a sense of Chef Aeron Choo’s work ethic as well as personality, we first have to tell the story of meeting her for the first time in her restaurant, Kappou Japanese Sushi Tapas Bar at Fortune Center. She’s working with her kitchen team, scrutinising the ingredients she has prepared, making sure that the slices of tuna she has made is up to scratch, prepping and discarding elements that she is dissatisfied with that don’t work with the dishes. Then, she pulls out a 1.7kg spiny lobster, fresh from the tank, and very much alive. When the lobster is clearly flailing from being yanked out of the tank it had been swimming in, she takes time to stroke, pet the lobster and whisper sweet nothings to calm the creature down.
