10 LESSONS I’VE LEARNT FROM MY ATTEMPTS AT TRANSFORMATION

I’ve been down the diet road a few times in my 36 years on earth. During this time I’ve amassed many “fed up with being fat” milestones, most notably 20-odd failed New Year resolutions, my attempt at pre-wedding weight loss, and two efforts aimed at bouncing back from pregnancy weight gain.

While still a work in progress, these multiple attempts to transform my diet have taught me many lessons. And with each new programme, I refine my approach as I work towards achieving my ultimate best body at 40 goal. Hopefully my experiences and insights can help you take some of the guesswork out of your attempts at effective and lasting lifestyle transformation.

1. Destroy that 4 letter word

”It’s time to start a diet.“ That’s how I have tended to start each new attempt at weight loss, but the mere mention of that horrible four-letter word would make me feel nauseous. In fact, merely thinking about it still has an effect on me.

I had created so much negativity around the word “diet” based on all my previous attempts aimed at cleaning up my diet. However, that all changed when the idea of a best body at 40 transformation crystallised in my mind. I was sitting on a chair at the dining room table when the proverbial switch was flicked. Sitting there feeling uncomfortable, tired and bloated, I had an overwhelming sense that I no longer wanted to feel this way.

However, this time around my resolve to change was very different. There was no major life event to prepare for with another diet. Rather, it was a decision to change my lifestyle, not just the way and what I eat.
