ANYONE WHO HAS GONE THROUGH A TEACHER-TRAINING PROGRAM KNOWS IT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR PILATES PRACTICE . It turns out the same is true even for people who have no intention of becoming teachers; they just appreciate the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, spend more time doing something they love and have the opportunity to meet other Pilates devotees. Here, five women share their stories.
HER BACKGROUND : I was a dancer, but after I survived a car accident in high school, I quit dancing and switched my focus to visual arts. Today, I work in photography and digital video (my work is represented by Chimento Contemporary Gallery), and teach at Otis College of Art and Design.
HER PILATES PRACTICE : In college, I eventually felt well enough to take dance classes again. My dance teacher was trained in Pilates—her parents studied at one of the original Pilates studios in New York. I started taking one to two privates or classes a week, first mat and then Reformer classes. I loved it right away. My body felt lengthened and strengthened. Within one month, the doctor asked me what I was doing; he said there was a lot of improvement in my muscle development, pain management and oxygenation of the body. Eighteen years later, it has improved my posture and strengthened my core, back, legs, arms and total body. It assists me to stretch out after a day of work— shooting, teaching in the lab and studio, sitting in front of the computer and installing art shows.
WHY SHE WENT THROUGH TEACHER TRAINING :
I had always been interested in taking the training. There was a short pause with my work, which allowed me the time to do it.
