HE HAS ALSO RECENTLY COMPLETED WORK ON BIRTH OF THE DRAGON, A HOLLYWOOD STUDIO FILM ABOUT THE YOUNG BRUCE LEE, IN WHICH PHILIP PLAYS THE LEAD ROLE.
ALREADY KNOWN AS AN ACCOMPLISHED MARTIAL ARTIST FROM A LONG-STANDING AND RESPECTED CHICAGO-BASED MARTIAL ARTS FAMILY, PHILIP NG IS HIGHLY REGARDED IN THE HONG KONG FILM AND TELEVISION INDUSTRY, WHERE HE HAS BEEN MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF SINCE THE EARLY 2000's. I SAT DOWN WITH PHILIP NG RECENTLY TO CHAT ABOUT HIS CAREER, HIS GOALS, AND HIS DEEP CONNECTION TO WSL VING TSUN KUEN HOK.
Please tell us how you got started in martial arts and how you gravitated towards Wing Chun?
I started training when I was about seven in the backyard of my grandparents’ home, with my father and couple of uncles we were living with at the time. I was overactive and was taught forms like “Tiger and Crane”, which I believe was mainly an exercise to expend my energies. When I was about 13, I got floored by a punch to the chest, courtesy of a schoolmate, after which I questioned my training. It dawned on me I needed to be able to apply this skillset, rather than merely going through the motions.
Soon after this experience, I was recommended by one of my uncles to travel to Hong Kong to train with Sifu Wong Shun Leung, a man who would lead me to view all fighting methods as strategies to incapacitate your opponent, while minimising harm to yourself, with some strategies more efficient than others. I found Wing Chun to be “Gung Fu distilled” into its most essential elements to solve the problem of incapacitating an aggressive opponent. Naturally, I invested more time and effort in understanding and training to apply this strategy.
