It’s 2019 and we are at peak vulnerability. Have you noticed? Since US social researcher Brené Brown gave her TEDx talk on the topic in 2010, it’s taken off: an avalanche of books, blogs and memes now earnestly encourage us to embrace vulnerability as a superpower, claiming that what we thought was a weakness is a crucial step in the pursuit of professional and personal success. Filtered through Instagram, the concept has spawned hundreds of make-up-free selfies, a whole lot of #realtalk and about 65,000 ‘ugly cry’ posts. Yep, vulnerability is absolutely everywhere – and yet, it feels as terrifying as ever.

Discomfort zone

Despite what the internet might tell you, most of us would still rather endure a root canal than truly expose our insecurities. “I don’t know anyone who is comfortable with it, to be honest,” says psychologist Mary Hoang, founder of Sydney practice The Indigo Project. “Everyone finds vulnerability uncomfortable and, if they don’t, they’re probably not really stepping into that place of discomfort for them.”
