Set in the Idyllic Cumbrian Countryside, Nicola Hills' Ancient Farmhouse Combines Pattern and Personality
First impressions count when it comes to buying houses – and this was certainly the case for Nicola and Tony Hills, who fell for the charms of this farmhouse after spotting its gnarled pitch pine front door, smothered in honeysuckle and roses. ‘The beautiful door was a terrific starting point for our viewing,’ says Nicola. ‘Seconds later, having stepped into the living room to be greeted by a huge inglenook fireplace, wooden beams and original flagstones, we were captivated.’
As Nicola and Tony wandered from room to room, strolling outside to admire the delightful gardens and magnificent rural views, the couple knew the house was a keeper. In addition to its exquisite setting, they recognised the property’s potential to be sympathetically extended, as and when needed.
It was in 2006 that Nicola and Tony started searching for their dream family home near the thriving town of Kirkby Lonsdale. ‘Luckily our estate agent gave us a tip-off about this farmhouse before it had even gone on the market,’ says Nicola. ‘Then, during the viewing, we hit it off with the lovely owners, who have since become friends. When they explained that they’d love to sell to us, but were keen to spend one last Christmas at the farmhouse, we said we were happy wait.’
