Move over passé fairy lights and candles, today is the age of drama, depth, fête and expression. I recently returned from ‘the Jewel’, the vortex inward waterfall inside Singapore’s Changi Airport, and what a magnificent man made wonder it is spanning three floors. Inspired by this, indoor waterfalls with seamless infinity water bodies inside homes, lit up from within especially for the festive season is at once relaxing and exuberant.
Oversized floral wallpaper that is larger than life and transports you to a nature inspired festive mood of joie de vivre is very joyful. No overkill here but some key walls, corridors, powder bath and sitting room in golds and greens along with floral colors is the look of festive gaiety perfect for October through to Christmas and January.
Especially when interspersed with palm imagery of large green leaves creates an interior that looks so lush and inviting at once bringing the outside inside, especially refreshing in this current world driven by artifice, technology and machine made products.
Take one single piece of furniture and upholster it in colorful embroidered mirrored Kutch fabric, or floral Kashmiri crewel embroidery with its typical chunky sunflowers and chrysanthemums. Choose one recliner or ottoman, an oversize chair or a big arm chair add a dramatic accent with the colorful textured embroidery and turn an ordinary piece of furniture into a magical show-stopper of a piece of furniture which is unapologetically joyous.
One tall intricate oversize festive deity in stone, marble, jade, wood or Papier-mâché mounted on a chic black granite pedestal, lit from a spotlight mounted below and in front of the statue illuminating it from its ensconced perch in the pedestal is not only celebratory but also very artistic and celebrates the handiwork of ancient traditional crafts and art forms.
