Inspired by the architectural traditions of Kerala and Chettinad, designer Sreejith Menon designs a charming residence in Thrissur that celebrates the traditional science of carpentry of Kerala.
When I was working on the residence, I approached each detail thinking of how a traditional carpenter would approach it’ says Sreejith Menon, designer, Sreejith Menon Designs, Cochin, Kerala, of a residence he designed for a client in Thrissur. He took this approach to honour the centuries-old building tradition of Kerala that integrates thachu shastra, the science of carpentry, as for centuries structures have been constructed using timber that is abundantly available locally.
As artisans played a crucial role in both designing and building structures – sacred and secular, palaces and homes – as well as decorating and carving them, Sreejith tackled the architecture and interiors of the residence as a master carpenter would. For practical, functional and cost-saving reasons he opted for a few modern elements and replicated some traditional wood work with metal. And the result was a wonderful Kerala-style residence infused with the warmth of wood and local culture and traditions.
Though Sreejith is primarily involved with commercial interiors, the client was insistent that he take on the design of the architecture and interiors of his residence. The client had seen Sreejith’s heritage home in Thrissur that was originally built in 1896 and recently restored by him. Seeing the care Sreejith had taken in keeping the restoration true to the original form and fabric of the structure, the client was determined that Sreejith take on the entire project!
