The astonishing success of the HBO production ‘Game of Thrones’ has showcased the wild beauty of Northern Ireland to the world. Fans of the show can travel the hills, beaches and ruins of the country and immerse themselves in the Game of Thrones stage.
County Antrim
The Glens of Antrim and beyond have played host to a Dothraki Horde, King Robert and his entourage as well as various characters loyal to the Starks, Greyjoys and Lannisters. It is possible to spend the day traveling throughout the Glens of Antrim and the north coast spotting film locations as you go. Heading out from Belfast you can travel to Slemish and the Shillanavogy Valley, setting for the Dothraki Sea, while nearby is Glenariff Forest Park, one of the settings for the Vale. One of the most infamous scenes was when Melisandre gave birth to the shadow demon that killed Renly Baratheon, filmed in the caves in the cosy village of Cushendun. From there, head to the dark hedges near Armoy to follow in Robert Baratheons footsteps along the King’s Road to Winterfell. At the end of the road lies Gracehill House, where you can enjoy a good meal or a drink and spot one of the famous Game of Thrones doors, carved especially for the show.
