Situated on the shores of Lough Leane in County Kerry, Killarney is filled to the brim with Irish heritage and history. Take yourself off to this town surrounded by countryside for a wonderful weekend break.
Things to see and do
Killarney is often referred to as ‘the town in the park’ due to it being surrounded by 26 thousand acres of National Parkland, with three stunning lakes. With this in mind, the great outdoors is yours to explore, where you will be wowed by the lush greenery and natural beauty again and again.
The old Kenmare Road is a great place to start with its superb trail that meanders through the uplands of Killarney National Park. It forms part of the Kerry Way long distance trail and offers a magical experience that will take you back in time, and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the deer and stag that reside in the wild here. The entire trail is not for the faint of heart, as it spans approximately 10 miles from start to finish, but it will surely reward your efforts along the way.
Another spot well worth a visit within the National Park is Tomies Wood, where you will find a spectacular series of waterfalls, the most famous being O’Sullivan’s Cascade. The cascades are hidden away, and again this walk is recommended for those that are relatively fit, but once there you will be treated to a secluded natural beauty, and you will no doubt feel a million miles away. To access the cascades you will need to walk through private land. The owner does not allow dogs or bikes.
